Difference among the CVBS, AV, YPbPr , RCA interfaces

CVBS  Interface is called “Color, Video, Blank and Sync", "Composite Video Baseband Signal", "Composite Video Burst Signal", or "Composite Video with Burst and Sync".

CVBS is a widely used standard, also known as baseband video or RCA video, which is way of a traditional image data transmission from the National Television Systems Committee (NTSC) television signal, which transmits data in analogue waveforms.

It is a format that combines an analogue television program (picture) signal with a sound signal and modulates it before the RF carrier. AV = AUDIO + VIDEO, in fact, VIDEO is CVBS.


AV Interface composite video interface, also known as AV interface or Video interface, is the most common of the video interface, almost all of the TV, DVD player products have this interface.

AV composite video interface, is an analog interface. It is an video interface of audio and video separation.

 It consists of three lines of the yellow, white, red independent RCA plug (also known as plum interface, RCA interface), which V Interface to connect the mixed video signal, it is the yellow socket; L interface to connect the left channel sound signal ,it is the white socket; R interface to connect the right channel sound signal ,it is the red socket. Because the video signal does not contain accompanying sound , the video input and the Output port are also equipped with audio input and output port (Audio In, Audio Out), in order to synchronously transmit accompanying sound. Therefore, sometimes the composite video interface is also known as AV (Audio Video) port.

AV interface to achieve the separation of audio and video transmission, which avoids the audio / video mixed interference caused by the image quality degradation, but because the AV interface transmission is still a video signal of mixed  brightness (Y / C). It needs to make bright / color separation and chroma decoding to imaging,mixing at first , then re-separation process will lead to signal loss or distortion, chroma  signal and brightness signal will have a great opportunity to interfere with each other.As the brightness (Y / C) mixed video signal processing methods have technical defects, AV video interface applications have a great limit.


YPbPr or Y'PbPr, also written as YPBPR, is a color space used in video electronics, in particular in reference to component video cables. YPbPr is the analog version of the YCbCr color space; the two are numerically equivalent but YPbPr is designed for use in analog systems whereas YCbCr is intended for digital video.

YPbPr is most commonly referred to as component video by manufacturers, though in truth this is imprecise: there are actually many types of component video, most of which are some form of RGB. Some video cards come with video-in video-out (VIVO) ports for connecting to component video devices.

Signals that use YPbPr offer enough separation that no color multiplexing is needed, so the quality of the extracted image is nearly identical to the signal before encoding. S-Video and composite video mix the signals together by means of electronic multiplexing; however, more often than not the signal is degraded at the display end as the display is not able to separate the signals completely. It is possible for their multiplexed counterparts to interfere with each other (see dot crawl).

Among consumer analog interfaces, only YPbPr and analog RGB component video are capable of carrying non-interlaced video and resolutions higher than 480i or 576i, up to HD ready for YPbPr.


RCA Interface is called Radio Corporation of American, because the RCA connector was invented by this company. RCA known as Lotus head, also known as AV terminal, also called AV interface,  there are pairs of white audio interface and yellow video interface, it is usually used RCA (commonly known as Lotus head) to connect, use only need to standard AV cable with lotus head connect with the corresponding interface.

So far, RCA connectors are the most common type of audio / video terminals. RCA audio terminals are generally marked with different colors in pairs: right channel with red, left channel with black or white. In general, RCA stereo audio lines are left and right channels for a group, each channel appearance is a line. They are usually paired audio interface right channel (red), left channel (white) and video interface (yellow).

Composite video (Composite) usually use by yellow RCA (Lotus socket) connector.

"Composite" means that the analog signal  transmit the luminance and chrominance signal in the same channel, but if the TV can not separate these two signals well, it will become blurred.
